Murdered Teen’s Organs Live on in Others

Aric Brill was only a teenager when he was killed in an attempted robbery last year. In the weeks prior to his death, he told his mother he wanted his organs donated if something should happen to him. It was his wish that has given the gift of life to six other people.
Karen and Don Brill remember the day they heard their son’s heartbeat, for the first time. “It was loud and steady and strong.”
It was that same heart that not only made Aric an energetic teenager, but the kind of person who thought about others when he suggested the idea of organ donation.
“He said, ‘Well if I can’t use them anymore, I would want somebody else to have them,’” said Karen Brill, Aric’s mother.
Ironically, weeks later Aric would die. He was shot in a robbery attempt
“Aric ran. I think they all ran. And, Aric was the one that got hit,” said Don Brill. Upon his death, Aric would get his wish. Six of his organs were donated.
“I think Aric would have been proud that he was able to help six other people with their lives and wake up tomorrow morning and love somebody.”
“Before I couldn’t even do the most mundane things like going to the corner market was a chore. Now I’m riding and swimming,” said Louis, who describes what it was like living with his damaged heart.
For the first time, Aric’s parents got a chance to meet the man who has their son’s heart beating in his chest. Aric’s parents used to stethoscope to once again her their son’s heartbeat.
“It was absolutely amazing,” said Karen Brill. The same heartbeat that beat strong in her 16-year-old son is now what gives Louis the energy to live everyday.
“The first thing I remember was being able to cover my ears and hear my heartbeat inside of me. That’s how strong it was,” said Louis.
Karen Brill remembers the first time she spoke with Louis.
“I said this is Karen Brill. And he said do I know you? And I said, I think you have my son’s heart.”
Aric isn’t dead. He lives on, in six others. It was the wish of young man with a big heart. Aric’s lungs, kidneys and liver were given to various people including a 14-year-old girl.
Aric’s killers still remain at large.
